Before you even touch the handle, take safety steps that matter. Kill the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the spark plug lead to prevent accidental starts. If the mower still has fuel, consider running it until the tank is low or siphoning some into an approved container to reduce spill risks during any tilt.
When manufacturers do recommend tilting, they usually insist the carburetor and air filter face upward so oil won’t run into them. Common mistakes compound quickly: tipping the wrong way can push oil into the filter, and gas will run into places it shouldn’t, creating fouled plugs or a clogged intake. You can also spill fuel on the deck or driveway, which is a fire and environmental hazard. Keep absorbent pads or a drip tray handy to catch leaks, and wash hands and tools promptly to avoid grease buildup.
