NY Democrats Spark Backlash After Rooting For Foreign World Cup Teams

Two New York Democrats sparked an online firestorm after admitting they would cheer for foreign teams over the United States in the World Cup, and the reaction has gone viral. Their answers at a local candidates’ forum exposed raw questions about loyalty, identity, and what voters expect from their elected officials. Social media tore into both candidates, and the episode is now shaping how some voters view the primary contest.

At a WPIX-TV candidates’ forum, Representative Adriano Espaillat and challenger Darializa Avila Chevalier were asked a simple question: who would win the final match and who they would be rooting for. Chevalier answered she was backing Senegal, while Espaillat said he supported Mexico. Those choices were enough to trigger widespread criticism from people who expected public displays of support for the U.S. team.

Part of the pushback is about optics and symbolism. For many voters, an elected official’s public allegiance in a low-stakes moment like a soccer game signals a baseline commitment to the country. “I can’t imagine an elected official not rooting for the country they are officially elected for.” remains a line quoted over and over across feeds.

The responses were amplified by videos and hot takes that spread quickly online, pushing the exchange from local TV into national conversation. Writer Mike Solana captured the frustration in a comment that reflected widespread disbelief: “It’s just a soccer game, you might say. but that’s exactly why this strikes me as so insane. there are zero stakes, the easiest ‘I care about america’ in the world, and they still can’t support our country. in fact, they seem to see any demonstration of support as a liability,” writer Mike Solana .

Other reaction was harsher and blunt. “These scumbags can’t even root for the USA in the World Cup. Their loyalty is to everywhere but here. That’s exactly why Americans are rejecting them,” one user wrote online . Another user added, “It is so crazy. I can’t imagine an elected official not rooting for the country they are officially elected for,” echoing the pull-quote that circulated widely . Calls for stronger consequences even popped up, with some saying the pair should be expelled from Congress .

Context matters here. Espaillat has said in the past he once overstayed a visa before later legalizing his status, and both candidates trace roots to the Dominican Republic. Chevalier spent time growing up in the Dominican Republic and Florida as the daughter of immigrants. Those personal histories are being woven into the debate over whether their World Cup picks reflect personal loyalties or political missteps.

Not everyone joined the outrage. Some argued the choices were pragmatic, noting the U.S. men’s team has often been viewed as an underdog and might not reach the finals. Still, for many conservative voters the moment crystallized a deeper worry: politicians who seem disconnected from basic displays of national pride may also be out of step on more serious issues.

The primary between Espaillat and Chevalier is being watched as a clash between establishment Democrats and a more radical wing that has been gaining ground in some districts. Chevalier has already issued apologies for earlier extreme posts reportedly advocating the abolition of private property, prisons, and police, and that history is being raised alongside the World Cup flap. The episode has left voters debating whether this was a harmless personal preference or a sign of values that clash with what many expect from their elected representatives.
