Disney Confronts Box Office Shortfall From Mandalorian & Grogu

Kathleen Kennedy’s shadow still hangs over Lucasfilm as its latest Star Wars movie landed well below expectations, leaving studio watchers wondering whether a creative shift or a marketing misstep is to blame. Box office numbers for Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu undercut projections, comparisons to past flops are piling up, and another Kennedy-linked project sits on the horizon with bigger names attached. This piece takes a look at the numbers, the context, and why fans and executives alike are watching every move.

Kennedy left Lucasfilm earlier in the year, but the ripple effects of her leadership choices are being felt in new releases. The Mandalorian & Grogu opened over Memorial Day weekend with some initial buzz and a $33.8 million opening night, yet the audience dropped dramatically by the holiday itself. That kind of early drop-off is exactly the sort of headline studios dread when they’re trying to build a franchise return.

Disney had been hoping for a four-day haul in the high nineties, but the final domestic four-day figure landed at about $82 million, well below the studio’s projection. In the ranks of Star Wars debuts this one slid under Solo: A Star Wars Story, which opened with a stronger, three-day start. That comparison stings because Solo has long been the low bar for modern franchise misfires.

Worldwide, The Mandalorian & Grogu sits near $168 million, which barely covers a reported production budget of roughly $165 million before marketing and distribution costs. Disney’s break-even point for the film is somewhere between $500 million and $600 million for a worldwide gross. Investors and executives are not just watching totals, they’re watching trends: weak legs and shallow international traction can doom a tentpole faster than a single bad weekend.

The Mandalorian screening

Another wrinkle is that the Han Solo movie, despite its own struggles, managed a global tally of about $393 million—still below the new project’s break-even threshold. For studios, these comparisons matter a lot because they shape how much will be spent on sequels, merchandising, and streaming windows. When a property underperforms against internal expectations, future entries often come with smaller budgets and higher scrutiny.

Looking ahead, Disney has a Kennedy-produced Star Wars film scheduled for May 28, 2027, titled Star Wars: Starfighter, and it brings a very different cast. Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams are attached, delivering more conventional star power than the most recent release, which leaned heavily on fan-favorite leads from the streaming era. Pedro Pascal, who features in the current film, has been a lightning rod of attention for both his offscreen advocacy and his public persona.

Pascal has spoken publicly about supporting co-stars through their personal gender journeys and comes from a family background rooted in Chilean leftist politics. Those biographical notes have become part of the conversation around casting decisions and creative direction, with some viewers applauding inclusivity and others feeling alienated by what they see as forced messaging. Either way, celebrity politics now factor into how audiences decide whether to buy a ticket.

Kennedy’s tenure at Lucasfilm featured pointed exchanges with parts of the fandom, and she often framed criticism as coming from a hostile subsection of viewers. “I think a lot of the women who step into ‘Star Wars’ struggle with this a bit more. Because of the fan base being so male dominated, they sometimes get attacked in ways that can be quite personal,” she said in 2024. Those remarks only deepened the divide between some creators and some fans, turning creative debates into culture-war flashpoints.

At times Kennedy drew a hard line on what she would call unacceptable behavior among critics. “anyone who engages in bigotry, racism, or hate speech … I don’t consider a fan.” That wording resurfaced whenever the studio tried to defend casting or story choices, and it shaped how public relations framed backlash versus legitimate critique. The net result is a fan base more wary and a studio more cautious in how it answers the court of public opinion.

For now the franchise faces a calendar full of expectations and a fan base that feels more vocal than ever. Studios will be parsing opening-day numbers, streaming viewership, and social sentiment to decide what gets another chance and what gets retooled. Whatever comes next, Lucasfilm’s next moves will be measured against both the balance sheet and the heated reactions that followed these recent releases.
