DOJ Charges Shooter With Attempted Assassination Of President Trump

The Department of Justice has charged 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen in connection with the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, including an attempted assassination charge tied to President Donald Trump. Security footage shows the suspect moving through a lobby checkpoint at the Washington Hilton before firing and wounding a Secret Service agent who was wearing a vest. Authorities say Allen was detained on the spot, and prosecutors point to an alleged manifesto that named Trump and members of his Cabinet as targets. The DOJ has filed three federal counts and says it will pursue the case aggressively.

Security cameras captured the rush through a hotel checkpoint that set off alarms and a fast response by federal officers. According to officials, the assailant pushed past barriers in the Washington Hilton lobby and opened fire inside, striking a Secret Serviceman who was protected by body armor. That quick reaction by trained agents helped prevent a far worse outcome and allowed law enforcement to detain the shooter without further loss of life.

Investigators later recovered material they describe as a manifesto that allegedly named President Trump and other senior officials as intended targets. The presence of those documents pushed prosecutors to treat the incident as an attempted assassination and not merely a shooting spree. Authorities are treating motive seriously while charging Allen under federal statutes designed to address attacks on national leaders.

Prosecutors laid out the charges as part of a swift federal response, and they underscored the stakes involved. They reminded the public that these allegations carry weighty penalties, noting in court papers that ‘This count is punishable by up to life in prison.’ That line underscored how seriously the Justice Department views an attack aimed at the commander in chief.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche framed the incident as both dangerous and contained, stressing the layers of protection that kept the president safe. “I want to make this clear,” acting Attorney General Todd Blanche . “This man was a floor above the ballroom, with hundreds of federal agents between him and the president of the United States. The Department of Justice approaches incidents like this with urgency and clarity of purpose.”

“Violence has no place in civic life. It cannot and will not be used to disrupt democratic institutions or intimidate those who serve them, and it certainly cannot continue to be used against the president of the United States.” That declaration was part of a broader message that the rule of law must hold, and that violent acts aimed at elected officials demand the full force of federal prosecution. Officials made it clear they will pursue every legal avenue to hold the accused accountable.

Blanche also signaled that the probe extends beyond the shooter himself and into networks and associations that may have influenced him. Blanche vowed to continue investigating the incident as well as the left-wing organizations Allen was reportedly with, saying he will “ensure that accountability is swift and certain.” Federal investigators plan to trace purchases, movements, and any contact that could explain how this plot developed.

In court filings, the DOJ spelled out how the three federal charges fit together and what the government intends to prove at trial. “Today, the Department of Justice filed three federal charges in United States District Court against Cole Tomas Allen,” Blanche said. That formal filing marks the start of a legal process that will test evidence, motive, and whether any larger conspiracy existed.

“The first count is attempted assassination of the president of the United States. This count is punishable by up to life in prison.” Prosecutors emphasize that the severity of that first count reflects both the intended victim and the alleged planning behind the act. If convicted, the accused faces penalties designed for the gravest of political crimes.

“The second count is interstate transportation of a firearm to commit a felony. This is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. And the third count is discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, which is punishable by a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of 10 years, a maximum of life.” Those counts layer additional federal sentencing exposure on top of the assassination-related charge and allow prosecutors to pursue a range of penalties if the facts support conviction.

Local and federal agents continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review the shooter’s digital footprint to reconstruct how and why the attack unfolded. Court dates and pretrial motions are expected in the coming weeks as defense attorneys begin to examine the charges and evidence. For now, authorities say their top priorities are preserving public safety, ensuring a transparent legal process, and following the evidence wherever it leads.
