Turning Point USA Will Register People to Vote at Oregon Versus Penn State College Football Game

Turning Point USA is taking politics to the tailgate, registering students and handing out 5,000 “Freedom” shirts at the Penn State versus Oregon game in State College. This move honors Charlie Kirk and leans into what conservatives have known for years: college campuses and sporting events are powerful places to meet young voters where they live. If you want to change outcomes, you have to show up where people gather and talk straight about freedom, values, and limited government.

The plan is simple and smart. TPUSA will distribute shirts that became a symbol in the wake of Kirk’s tragic assassination and set up voter registration tables to turn engagement into ballots. College football is one of the few cultural institutions that still draws vast crowds of young adults in a single place, so this is tactical outreach, not just symbolism.

Benny Johnson explained the strategy recently on The Will Cain Show, describing it as a cultural fight won in the arena of sports and student life. It’s a reminder that conservative organizers understand how to blend popular culture with politics to reach skeptical young voters. The goal is to register students who might otherwise drift away from civic participation.

“I have a big announcement for your show. In the vein and in honor of Charlie Kirk, we are going to fight cultural battles and we’re going to win them in an arena that Charlie loved so very much — college football. I know this is a sports show as well, and I know that you’ve had a long and wonderful history on ESPN, and I know you’re a big sports guy, so you’re gonna love this, and we are breaking news here. Turning Point USA, at the game of the week, Penn State versus the Oregon Ducks. This is going to be a massive game. This is a game that Charlie Kirk was going to attend. Charlie Kirk loves Oregon. But he also has a bunch of fans at Penn State and has done huge events there. We are going to be handing out — Turning Point USA is going to be handing out 5,000 Charlie Kirk “Freedom” shirts at that game. It’s going to be a whiteout game, at State College, so it’s going to look great in the stands, and we want the entire stands of 100,000 people in that bowl, so, you know, it’s going to be a fraction of them, but we want the student section to be popping with Charlie Kirk “Freedom” shirts for the whiteout at Penn State this weekend. This happens on Saturday, there’s going to be a Turning Point table, and we’re going to hope to do Charlie proud by fighting those cultural battles.”

That quote is worth reading slowly because it frames the effort: culture, students, visibility, and a clear call to action. This isn’t abstract messaging or committee memos; it’s boots-on-the-ground outreach in a place where young Americans gather and talk about identity, priorities, and the future. If conservatives can meet them there, the conversation doesn’t start from scratch.

Youth turnout has historically been taken for granted by Democrats who assume campus culture will do the work of the ballot box. That assumption is cracking because conservative messaging and grassroots organizers are active and focused on persuading young voters through direct engagement rather than preaching from a podium. Winning over the under-30 bloc requires consistent presence and a message that respects their aspirations while offering practical policies.

Look at the shift among young men as one example of conservative momentum: in 2020, Trump captured roughly 41 percent of that demographic, and by 2024 that share rose to about 56 percent. That swing is meaningful because it reflects a larger realignment where younger voters, once reliably blue, are more open to conservative arguments on economics, free speech, and national pride. For decades, winning presidents often relied on at least 60 percent of the youth vote, but those dynamics are changing and Republicans can capitalize if they keep engaging.

Charlie Kirk’s campus work, debates, and media presence helped normalize conservative ideas among young people who had been told those views were off-limits. His approach was unapologetic and direct, and those qualities resonate with a generation tired of curated, safe versions of the truth. Preserving that blueprint means more than nostalgia; it means training organizers, recruiting volunteers, and showing up at the next big game with registration forms in hand.

Turning Point USA and Benny Johnson understand that politics is a cultural fight first and an electoral fight second. Bringing voter registration to a whiteout game accomplishes both: it creates a public, viral moment and it converts interest into registration and, ultimately, turnout. Conservative organizers who combine passion, visibility, and practical steps will change outcomes more reliably than punditry and hope alone.

For conservatives, the lesson is clear: stop waiting for youth turnout to happen and make it happen. Take your message to the places young people populate, speak to their concerns honestly, and give them a simple path to participate. In a country where every election can hinge on turnout, the strategy of meeting students at sports events is as pragmatic as it is symbolic.
