A 27-year-old former youth organizer from Brooklyn found herself in legal trouble after allegedly urging violence against Jewish students at a New York City high school through social media. Iman Abdul was arrested on August 8, following accusations that she encouraged her Instagram followers to “attack” Leon M. Goldstein High School. The incident has led to multiple felony charges and strong condemnation from Jewish advocacy groups.

Abdul, who has a history of political campaigning for figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and State Sen. Julia Salazar, reportedly posted inflammatory messages targeting the school. Her Instagram post included a screenshot of the school’s location and accused the students of supporting Israel, using derogatory terms. This post quickly caught the attention of law enforcement and Jewish organizations.

The reaction from authorities was swift, with the NYPD’s intelligence division and Commissioner Jessica Tisch quickly informed. Viewing Abdul’s post as a serious threat, they arrested her the same day. She now faces charges such as making a terroristic threat and aggravated harassment, highlighting the perceived danger to the school’s nearly 1,000 students.

Jewish advocacy groups reacted strongly to the incident, with StopAntisemitism sharing the post on their platform and calling it antisemitic. The organization is demanding full legal accountability for Abdul’s actions. DOE pre-K staffer Tova Plaut expressed her horror, stating that publicly marking a school for attack due to its Jewish population crosses a dangerous line.

Abdul, in her defense, claimed that her call for an “attack” was meant as a verbal critique, not a call for physical violence. She insisted that she never intended to incite a mass or individual physical attack on the students. Despite her explanation, her Instagram and LinkedIn profiles were removed amid the backlash.

Leon M. Goldstein High School, known for its secular education and student-led groups like the Israel Club, fosters an inclusive environment. Supporters argue that Abdul’s rhetoric misrepresents the school’s mission and community. Her past involvement in political campaigns and education initiatives has now come under scrutiny.

Critics have pointed to broader ideological influences in academic settings, with some claiming that university environments contribute to normalizing antisemitic rhetoric. Moshe Spern, president of United Jewish Teachers, suggests that such incidents result from years of indoctrination in city schools and universities. Israel advocate Uri Cohen criticized Abdul’s social media history as being filled with similar content before it was taken down.

Amid growing concerns about antisemitic sentiment in schools, many parents and educators are calling for stronger protections. The NYPD’s quick response to the threat indicates a commitment to addressing such issues, though it remains unclear if additional security measures will be implemented at the school. The possibility of further charges against Abdul is still uncertain.

The situation highlights the ongoing tension and challenges faced by Jewish communities in educational settings. Authorities continue to monitor online platforms for extremist threats. Meanwhile, the community demands accountability and justice for actions that threaten school safety.

As the case unfolds, Abdul’s legal team has yet to make a public statement. The community remains watchful, hoping for a resolution that ensures safety and prevents future incidents. The incident serves as a reminder of the pervasive challenges in balancing free speech and safety in public spaces.
