Las Vegas Hotels Face Lawsuits Over Bedbug ‘Massacre’ Causing Guest ‘Injuries’

A street in the heart of Paris was lined with mattresses wrapped in plastic, highlighting the ongoing bedbug problem plaguing the city. An 18-year-old student, on her way home from school, stumbled upon this unsettling sight. Bedbugs have become an issue not just in Paris, but also in places like Las Vegas, where infestations have led to legal actions.

In April, lawsuits were launched against two Las Vegas resorts due to incidents from the summer of 2024. Teresa Bruce, a guest at Treasure Island, discovered bites during her stay in June. Despite switching rooms, she still found herself bitten, leading to considerable discomfort and frustration.

Stephen and Courtney Gully, who stayed at the Luxor Hotel, experienced similar issues. They reported bites that swelled and became intensely itchy, with Courtney’s reaction so severe that she required an ambulance trip to the hospital. Their experience was such that they had to dispose of nearly all their belongings due to the infestation’s severity.

Brianna McKenzie, also at the Luxor in July, echoed these complaints, describing her own ordeal with bedbugs. She claimed she was “massacred” by the pests, resulting in emotional distress and other injuries. Attorney Brian Virag, representing these travelers, emphasized the significant impact of these encounters, noting that his clients suffered both physical and emotional harm.

Virag stressed the importance of having well-trained housekeeping staff capable of identifying and eradicating bedbugs. He noted the trauma from these experiences is “super significant” and urged hotels to prioritize guest safety by maintaining rigorous pest control procedures. He pointed out how guests often don’t immediately connect their bites to bedbugs, which can delay necessary actions.

Resorts need to ensure rooms are free from bedbugs when turned over to new guests, Virag advised. He also recommended that those affected document everything, as it can be crucial in addressing these issues. The attorney is hopeful that the involved hotels will soon respond to the complaints, addressing the concerns raised by these incidents.

The bedbug issue in Las Vegas is a wake-up call for hotels to step up their pest management efforts. As Virag said, catching an infestation early is crucial due to the rapid reproduction rate of bedbugs. Keeping these pests at bay is not just about maintaining a clean image but ensuring the safety and comfort of guests.

While the hotels in question have remained silent so far, the expectation is for them to respond soon. The legal actions underscore the need for hotels to take proactive measures against bedbug infestations. Both travelers and hotels must stay vigilant to prevent such distressing experiences in the future.
