The Virginia House Democrats have approved a ban on “assault firearms” that would prohibit certain semiautomatic centerfire rifles.
The ban specifies that if these rifles have features such as a threaded barrel, vertical fore grip, sound suppressor, muzzle brake, or folding/telescoping/collapsible rear stock, they fall into the prohibited category.
Additionally, the ban extends to semiautomatic centerfire pistols with a detachable magazine and threaded barrel allowing for the use of a sound suppressor or flash suppressor.
This combination alone would make many popular semiautomatic pistols from various manufacturers ineligible under the ban.

The House Democrats’ emphasis on “sound suppressors” – devices that reduce but not eliminate sound – implies that they are prohibiting firearms based on features that offer health benefits, such as protecting the hearing of target shooters and hunters, as well as benefiting the environment.
According to Guns.com, the Firearms Policy Coalition has stated its intention to file a lawsuit if the ban is enacted into law.
