Spain’s Aitana Bonmatí ‘In Shock’ After Euros Final Loss

Spain’s journey in the UEFA Women’s Euros ended in heartbreak as they fell to England in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Despite being the reigning World Cup champions and holding the UEFA Nations League title, Spain’s quest for a European title remains unfulfilled. England managed to edge past Spain in a dramatic finale, where the match’s intensity was palpable.

Aitana Bonmatí, a star player for Spain, expressed her disappointment, saying, “We were the best team of the tournament, but sometimes that’s not enough.” Her performance was notable, especially since she had just recovered from viral meningitis. Unfortunately, her penalty was one of two stopped by England’s goalkeeper, Hannah Hampton.

Spain’s Mariona Caldentey had initially put her team ahead with a well-timed header but later saw her penalty attempt thwarted. The Spanish side had numerous opportunities, especially in the first half, with top scorer Esther Gonzalez coming close on multiple occasions. However, it was England’s Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo who combined efforts to equalize, setting the stage for a tense penalty shootout.

“It was cruel,” Bonmatí remarked, reflecting on the match. “We played better, created more scoring chances, but in soccer sometimes that’s not enough. It all came down to the penalties.” This sentiment was echoed by Spain’s coach Montse Tomé, who believed the team deserved more than just a bitter ending.

Spain’s captain, Irene Paredes, struggled to find silver linings immediately after the match. “Right now, it’s a very tough moment,” she said, acknowledging England’s fortune in the shootout. The captain noted that although England appeared content to let the match go to penalties, it was Spain who faltered under the pressure.

The defeat was reminiscent of Barcelona’s loss in the Women’s Champions League final, which added another layer of complexity to Spain’s recent challenges. Paredes reflected on the need for luck in these high-stakes scenarios, something she felt had favored England this time.

Despite the setback, Spain remains the World Cup champion and is gearing up for future competitions, including the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. The team is focused on bouncing back and capitalizing on its golden generation of players. “We will be back,” Bonmatí promised, highlighting the team’s resilience and determination.

As they look to the future, Spain aims to channel their disappointment into motivation for upcoming tournaments. The team’s youthful talent and past successes suggest a promising horizon, even if the European title slipped away this time. Reporting for this piece was done by The Associated Press.
