The tragic murder of former U.S. Marine Corps serviceman Nicholas Quets by Mexican cartel members on October 18 has left a grieving Arizona family without the anticipated support or even acknowledgement from their state’s leadership or the White House. Only one presidential candidate reached out to Quets’s family, a silence they find both inexplicable and deeply unsettling.
Vance tells family of murdered Marine veteran Nicholas Douglas Quets:
“I promise you that Calvary is coming. And when Donald Trump is president, we’re going to kick the cartel’s asses and we’re going to do it for you and for every person in this room.” pic.twitter.com/wStYBaX2IG

A devoted patriot hailing from a lineage of U.S. military members, Quets was well-regarded by his family for his commitment to service, faith, and love of country. His father, Doug Quets, and his brother-in-law, Philip Sweet, described Nicholas as “a protector of other people” and a constant source of joy for his young nephew. Doug recalls that Nicholas, standing at 6’3” with “muscles stacked on top of muscles,” was an all-American man proud to serve his nation and his community in Pima County, Arizona. Yet his dedication did not shield him from the dangers that lurk near the U.S.-Mexico border.
DEMANDING JUSTICE: It has been a week since Tucson marine veteran Nicholas Douglas Quets was murdered by gunmen in Mexico. I just sat down with his family who still haven’t heard from our government. They want US involved in the investigation. Full report @KVOA at 6. pic.twitter.com/MXmpJ7OY8E

Quets’s final trip was meant to be an innocent outing. On that Friday, he traveled to Nogales, Arizona, to pick up friends for a beach trip to Rocky Point, a popular destination for Arizonans, commonly referred to as “Arizona’s Beach.” Tragically, he encountered cartel gunmen along the Caborca highway, an area that had seen a surge in cartel violence in recent months. Nicholas was shot in the back and through the heart, killed instantly in an unprovoked attack at a cartel roadblock. His truck was stolen, though his cash and belongings were left untouched, ruling out robbery as a motive.
The brutality of this murder on foreign soil, involving a decorated American serviceman, might have been expected to elicit a swift and coordinated response from state and national leaders. Doug Quets told Breitbart News that he received a late-night call from the U.S. Consulate in Mexico, confirming his son’s murder, followed by contact from the State Department. But beyond these initial government contacts, there was silence. Despite reaching out to state and federal officials, including Arizona’s Governor Katie Hobbs, Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly, and Attorney General Merrick Garland, the family has received no further outreach or condolence.
The absence of public support or official statements from these leaders, particularly those like Senator Kelly, who served in the U.S. Navy, has struck the Quets family as inconceivable. “Kelly ran on his military background, but we’ve heard nothing from him,” Doug noted, highlighting the contrast between Kelly’s veteran platform and his lack of response to the murder of a fellow servicemember.
Adding to the family’s dismay, the American media has provided minimal coverage of this killing and the broader cartel violence impacting Americans on the Mexican border. For Doug and Philip, the lack of national media attention reflects a troubling trend: the prioritization of certain stories over others, despite their clear significance. Nicholas’s murder, an act of cartel violence against a U.S. citizen, could have spotlighted the dangers of cross-border criminal activity, but it has instead gone largely ignored.
One presidential candidate, however, reached out to the Quets family, offering both condolences and an acknowledgment of the urgent need to address escalating cartel violence that increasingly spills into American lives. The family expressed gratitude for this response, contrasting it with what they see as a glaring lack of initiative or responsibility from current officeholders. Their grief is compounded by what they see as political negligence, as Doug reflects, “This is an American killed on the other side of the border … you’d think this would be a major news story, you’d think.”
According to Breitbart:
‘For the Quets, they were being ignored by the very politicians they served to protect. That was until they were put in touch with Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), former President Donald Trump’s running mate, by Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ).
Vance arrived in Tuscon on Oct. 22 to hold a campaign rally. The Quets went to the rally not knowing what to expect from a sitting U.S. senator representing a state 2,000 miles away from their home.
Before the rally kicked off, Vance met with the Quets.
“Vance was the most incredibly normal guy you could ever meet,” Doug says. “Within ten seconds of us talking, we’re getting down to business about what happened to Nicholas. He asked us, what can he do about it, U.S. involvement in the investigation, extradition of those who are responsible, going after the Mexican drug cartel network as well, and U.S. policy to prevent this in the future.”
Vance asked the Quets if he could share Nicholas’s story at the rally. The family, Doug says, said, “of course, yes.”
“I want to talk about something that hasn’t gotten much news coverage and it’s connected to this border issue. And I want to name this family and this young man by name … just a few days ago, there was a United States Marine veteran who was killed by the Mexican drug cartels,” Vance said:
What the cartels are doing, my friends, it’s not just affecting us north of the border, it’s affecting north and south of the border. It’s affecting a young Marine who wants to visit friends and spend some time on the beach. [Emphasis added]
This family lost their son four days ago. Have they heard from a single elected official? Of course, they haven’t … because we’re led by incompetent people who don’t give a damn about the American people and that’s going to change when the United States is led by Donald Trump. [Emphasis added]
Most significantly, Vance vowed to the Quets, “While you’ve been ignored by your own government for the last four days in the midst of this unbelievable tragedy, I promise you, the calvary is coming, and when Donald Trump is president, we’re going to kick the cartels asses and we’re going to do it for you and for every person in this room.” ‘
Such silence raises pertinent questions about the priorities and accountability of those in power. This tragedy is not merely an isolated incident but part of a pattern involving an unchecked cartel influence along the border that directly affects American lives. With high-profile leaders like President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris refraining from public statements, critics argue this lack of attention underscores an administrative indifference to border security concerns that impact everyday citizens.
Nicholas Quets’s murder illustrates the consequences of an inadequately addressed border crisis, a reality the family believes deserves far greater national attention and action. The Quets family’s sorrow is deepened by a growing sense that their loved one’s life and service were devalued through the absence of response. This tragedy, they believe, is symptomatic of a larger issue — one in which political leadership fails to recognize the urgency of border violence, even when it claims the lives of loyal American servicemen.
