Georgia Poultry Mobilizes, Protects Farms And Jobs From HPAI

Georgia officials confirmed a commercial chicken operation in Gordon County has tested positive for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, triggering a quarantine, targeted response, and regional surveillance as authorities work to safeguard flocks and the state’s poultry industry.

The infected site reported signs of illness midweek and contacted state testing resources the next day, leading to confirmation and an immediate response by agricultural teams. Officials said the facility housed about 140,000 broiler chickens, and steps were taken to limit further spread. Rapid action focused on containment and biosecurity to protect nearby farms and workers.

State emergency management and agricultural response units arrived quickly and “deployed to the affected premises to conduct depopulation, disposal, cleaning, and disinfection.” Those operations are routine but wrenching, aimed at removing virus reservoirs and preventing onward transmission. Work continues on-site as teams follow established protocols for disposal and thorough sanitation.

Authorities imposed a quarantine covering commercial poultry operations within a 6.2-mile radius for at least two weeks, and farms in that area will receive surveillance testing. Quarantine zones help slow the virus while testing clarifies the extent of any spread. The goal is to detect cases early and isolate infected flocks so movement restrictions and cleaning can be targeted.

“This poses a serious threat to Georgia’s #1 industry and to the thousands of Georgians whose livelihoods depend on poultry production,” Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler J Harper said in a statement. That sentiment reflects how tightly the state’s economy and rural communities are tied to poultry, and why officials emphasize fast reporting and strict biosecurity. Farmers, processors, transporters, and support services all face risk when a commercial flock is hit.

Recent weeks have seen outbreaks elsewhere too, underlining a national pattern of recurring HPAI detections. A commercial turkey farm in Swift County, Minnesota, and an egg-layer operation in Indiana were among the more recent domestic sites reported to have infections. These cases stress the need for vigilance across different types of production systems and geographic regions.

HPAI was first confirmed in a commercial U.S. flock on Feb. 8, 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Inspection Service. Since then, detections have occurred sporadically and in clusters, forcing producers and regulators to adapt and respond repeatedly. Federal data show that over the last 30 days, 64 flocks were confirmed infected, impacting nearly 3.5 million birds.

For producers, prevention hinges on strict biosecurity: controlling access, sanitizing equipment, and separating domestic birds from wild waterfowl and other potential carriers. Surveillance testing and rapid reporting remain essential to catch infections before they spread widely. Support from state and federal teams helps with testing, depopulation where necessary, and guidance on cleanup and restocking timelines.

The human health risk from most HPAI strains remains low, but the economic and animal welfare impacts are significant for affected farms and communities. Market disruptions, disposal challenges, and the emotional toll on producers are part of the fallout when commercial flocks are lost. Officials continue to urge cooperation with quarantine and testing rules to protect the broader industry and local livelihoods.
