Election 2024: What Every Conservative Voter Needs to Know About This Historic Presidential Race

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, it’s crucial to look beyond the daily news cycle and understand the broader landscape of what’s at stake. Here’s a breakdown of the essential questions, facts, and issues defining this pivotal election season.

When is Election Day?

Under U.S. law, the presidential election takes place every four years on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. This year, that date is November 5, 2024. While Election Day itself is a focal point, millions of Americans are already casting their votes early, either in person or by mail. States oversee their own election processes, and polling times vary. The first polls will close at 6 p.m. ET in certain counties in Indiana and Kentucky, with the last closing in Alaska by 1 a.m. ET on November 6.

The Candidates: Trump vs. Harris

The two leading candidates are former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump, the Republican nominee, is running alongside Ohio Senator JD Vance, while Harris, the Democratic nominee, has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. A few third-party candidates, such as Chase Oliver (Libertarian) and Jill Stein (Green Party), also appear on ballots in several states. While Robert F. Kennedy Jr. initially ran as an independent, he has since endorsed Trump, signaling the influence and unity within conservative ranks.

Why is This Election Different?

Several key issues set this election apart:

  1. Cost of Living: Inflation and the cost of essential goods have hit American households hard, and Trump has consistently addressed this issue, promising economic measures to ease burdens on families. His plan to impose tariffs on foreign goods aims to support American industries, despite pushback from economists. Polls suggest he holds a clear advantage over Harris on economic concerns.
  2. Border Security and Immigration: Trump’s stance on immigration remains strong, advocating for strict border control measures. He has pledged to deport millions of illegal migrants and further secure the border, making this a critical issue for many conservative voters.
  3. Abortion: Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, abortion has become a focal point for both parties. Harris and her supporters advocate for enshrining abortion rights into law, positioning it as a matter of personal freedom. For many conservatives, however, this issue reinforces their commitment to the sanctity of life and states’ rights.
  4. Election Integrity: Trump’s challenge of the 2020 election results and subsequent Justice Department accusations of “election interference” have only increased conservative support for election reform. Polls show that many Republicans now question the integrity of the 2020 results and are determined to ensure election security in 2024.

How Does the Electoral College Work?

With over 150 million expected voters, it’s important to remember that the winner is determined by 538 electors, not the popular vote. This system allocates each state’s electoral votes based on its congressional representation, and a candidate needs 270 votes to win the presidency. Most states use a winner-takes-all approach, but Maine and Nebraska allocate votes by congressional district, adding another layer of strategy for candidates.

In the event of a tie – a rare but possible outcome – the decision would shift to Congress. Each state delegation in the House would cast a single vote to choose the president, and Republicans currently hold a majority of House delegations. This tie-breaker process, known as a “contingent election,” would likely favor a Trump presidency if invoked.

Key States to Watch

Seven battleground states could tip the scales. Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, often referred to as the “Blue Wall” states, were pivotal in both 2016 and 2020. These states have significant union representation, large urban centers, and diverse voting demographics. Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, and Georgia are also crucial, each having shifted politically in recent years as their populations and voter priorities have evolved.

For Trump, success in these states means energizing working-class and suburban voters. Harris, on the other hand, needs strong support among suburban women and minority communities in these areas to secure their electoral votes.

Could We See a Repeat of 2020’s Extended Counting Period?

Changes have been implemented since 2020 to streamline the counting of mail-in ballots, but a final outcome could still take time if margins are close. Some states now allow pre-Election Day processing of mail-in ballots, a measure intended to quicken results. However, a delay is still possible if results hinge on a few critical swing states. In 2000, a historically close election between George W. Bush and Al Gore took 36 days to resolve, underscoring the possibility of extended vote counting in exceptionally tight races.

Looking Ahead: What Does This Election Mean for the Future?

The stakes in this election extend beyond the policies of Trump and Harris. With a focus on border security, economic stability, and protecting constitutional freedoms, Trump’s America First agenda offers a distinct vision for the nation. For many conservative voters, these priorities reflect a commitment to restoring traditional values and strengthening national sovereignty.

This election isn’t just about the candidates on the ballot; it’s about the direction of America. Voters will decide whether the country continues on a progressive path or returns to the principles that have made it a beacon of freedom and prosperity. With November 5 fast approaching, the choices made at the ballot box will shape the future of American values, security, and economic strength.
