Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) warned in a Friday statement that former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton could face contempt of Congress if they continue to avoid cooperating with subpoenas tied to the Jeffrey Epstein probe.

The House Oversight Committee issued subpoenas in August seeking testimony from the Clintons — initially setting depositions for Oct. 14 for Bill Clinton and Oct. 9 for Hillary Clinton — as part of its inquiry into ties to registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Comer said that if the pair do not appear for depositions slated for Dec. 17 and 18 or agree to sit for questioning in early January, the committee will pursue contempt charges. “It has been more than four months since Bill and Hillary Clinton were subpoenaed to sit for depositions related to our investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s horrific crimes,” Comer said in the Friday statement. “During that period, the former president and former secretary of state have repeatedly delayed, obstructed, and largely failed to cooperate with the Committee staff’s scheduling efforts. If they do not appear for their scheduled depositions next week or agree to a date in early January, the Oversight Committee will initiate contempt of Congress proceedings.”

Epstein died by apparent suicide in his Manhattan jail cell while awaiting trial after his 2019 arrest. Even after his conviction, Epstein maintained a network of connections with celebrities, politicians and business leaders — figures who have been linked to him in various reports, including L Brands founder Les Wexner, Prince Andrew and filmmaker Woody Allen.

Democrats have attempted to link Trump to Epstein through their past association. Virginia Giuffre — a prominent Epstein accuser — did not allege misconduct by Trump in her memoir published after she died by suicide. Attorney Bradley Edwards, who represented some victims of Epstein, said Trump assisted investigators in a 2018 .

“[Trump] was very helpful in the information that he gave and gave no indication whatsoever that he was involved in anything untoward,” Edwards said.
