Chiefs Face Playoff Climb, Creed Humphrey Says No Panic

The Chiefs are in a tougher spot than many expected, facing a real uphill climb to get back into playoff form, but center Creed Humphrey has been clear about the team’s mindset: “the team won’t be hitting the panic button.” This piece looks at why the season has gone sideways so far, how leadership is responding, and what the path forward looks like for Kansas City.

Fans and analysts alike are surprised by how inconsistent the Chiefs have been, especially given past dominance. A mix of costly mistakes, spotty execution and untimely breakdowns in key moments has produced results that don’t match expectations. Those issues have compounded, making each game feel more urgent than it should at this point in the year.

On offense, rhythm has been the enemy more than talent, with drives sputtering when the team needs them most. The line has work to do in short-yardage and third-down situations, and timing between quarterback and receivers looks off at times. When drives end too quickly, the defense gets pulled into extended duty and momentum evaporates.

Defensively, giving up explosive plays and failing to finish in the red zone have been recurring headaches. Penalties and missed tackles have lengthened the field and given opponents extra chances. When the defense has to play from behind, the whole game plan shifts and third-and-manage becomes all too common.

Amid the noise, Creed Humphrey’s voice stands out because it emphasizes steadiness. He’s not promising easy fixes, but he’s insisting the roster won’t fold under pressure. That kind of leadership matters when questions pile up, and veteran presence like his can stabilize a locker room that otherwise might fray under doubt.

Coaching adjustments are happening behind the scenes, with a focus on fundamentals rather than big swings. That means reworking play-calling balance, tightening situational discipline, and simplifying assignments so players can execute without overthinking. The aim is to make the team harder to beat by cleaning up the little things that have turned close games into losses.

The schedule from here is a gauntlet and every matchup carries extra weight, but the playoff door is not sealed shut. Momentum in the NFL can shift quickly with a couple of polished performances and a few plays going the right way. For a roster with the experience and talent the Chiefs have, short bursts of excellence can flip the narrative and restore confidence.

What will be most interesting is how the players carry themselves in the next stretch — whether they shrink under pressure or lean into accountability and execution. Humphrey’s blunt refusal to panic sets a tone, but tone alone won’t fix missed assignments or turnovers. The real test will be a string of games where fundamentals and focus replace excuses and fatigue.
