Andre Agassi, the tennis legend with eight Grand Slam titles under his belt, has taken a new leap into the world of pickleball. At the recent U.S. Open Pickleball Championships, he teamed up with 18-year-old Anna Leigh Waters, who happens to be the top-ranked female player globally. Although Agassi won his first match, he faced a tough challenge in the second and ultimately didn’t advance. Yet, despite this, he found himself captivated by the sport.

Agassi expressed his newfound passion during a chat with Fox News Digital. He said, “Dude, I’m not just liking it, I’m loving it. … It’s an anomaly to see any support ever at this kind of pace, but it’s easy to see why.” The sport not only offers entertainment but also fosters unity across generations and cultures, breaking down barriers in ways other sports rarely do. It’s accessible for everyone, making it appealing to a wide audience.

The Netflix documentary “Dreambreaker: A Pickleball Story,” directed by Ashley Underwood, Larry David’s wife, has also spotlighted this growing sport. Underwood shared her experience with pickleball, which she began playing during the COVID-19 pandemic. She transitioned from tennis to pickleball and was amazed by the professional level of play she witnessed. According to her, the pro players operate on a different level, showcasing athleticism that she found captivating.

Agassi, despite his extensive tennis background, admitted there is a steep learning curve in pickleball. “It’s really hard. These guys are so specialized, it’s so sensitive, such little margin for error,” he explained. The game requires mastering nuances that create opportunities, and Agassi had to adjust his instincts to the pickleball court. He mentioned the challenge of managing his adrenaline during matches.

The sport’s popularity is on the rise. A report highlighted nearly 20 million pickleball players in 2024, showing a dramatic increase of 311% since 2011. The accessibility and community aspect of pickleball are contributing factors to this surge in interest, drawing people from all walks of life to the courts.

The appeal of pickleball isn’t limited to just the United States. People worldwide are discovering the sport, which is easy to pick up yet challenging to master, providing both fun and competition. It’s this combination that has players like Agassi and Underwood hooked.
