Terry Bradshaw had a strong reaction to the idea of Aaron Rodgers joining the Pittsburgh Steelers. When the speculation began, Bradshaw dismissed it, calling it a “joke.” He expressed his thoughts by saying, “What are you gonna do? Bring him in for one year? Are you kidding me? … That guy needs to stay in California. Go somewhere and chew on bark and whisper to the gods out there.” His comments came in May, reflecting his skepticism about the move.
Despite Bradshaw’s remarks, Rodgers eventually signed a one-year contract with the Steelers, marking what he says will be his last season in the NFL. This decision followed months of rumors and speculation about his future in football. Rodgers is now participating in his 21st training camp, having spent 18 years with the Green Bay Packers and two with the New York Jets.
When asked about Bradshaw’s comments, Rodgers couldn’t resist a chuckle. He joked, “I whisper to the gods every single day,” poking fun at Bradshaw’s earlier critique. However, Rodgers maintained a respectful stance, hoping to bridge the gap between them. “I’ve known Terry for a long time, being a part of Fox. Terry’s a legend. He’s an absolute legend. He won four Super Bowls. He’s had a legendary career in the media,” Rodgers mentioned to the NFL Network.
Rodgers acknowledged that Bradshaw might have preconceived notions about him. He said, “But Terry, like a lot of people, doesn’t know me.” Rodgers expressed a desire to connect with Bradshaw and suggested they could find common ground. “I’d love to get to know Terry on a deeper level. I feel like if he gave me a chance to get to know him, then we’d have a good friendship,” Rodgers said.
Rodgers extended an olive branch, suggesting they could share a moment together. He even humorously mentioned, “And maybe we can go chew some bark or whatever the hell he’s talking about together.” Despite the playful jab, Rodgers was sincere in wanting to improve their relationship.
While discussing the situation, Rodgers also emphasized the respect he holds for NFL legends like Bradshaw. He stated he has “nothing but the utmost amount of respect and deference” for the achievements of past football greats. Rodgers credits them with laying the groundwork for today’s players. “They laid the foundation for us to be able to play in this great game. To be paid like kings and to carry on the tradition of excellence that guys like the Bradshaws of the world in the ’70s and Bart Starr in the ’60s and [Vince] Lombardi and Joe Montana and Steve Young and Troy Aikman and Brett Favre and all the greats,” Rodgers remarked.
He acknowledged that current players benefit from the legacy of players from previous decades. “We’re standing on the backs of those guys. It’s because of how they played and how they carried themselves that we’re able to have this opportunity to still play this great game, to get paid really well, to set ourselves up for our future,” Rodgers explained.
Rodgers is adjusting to his new role with the Steelers, where he is seen preparing for the upcoming season. As he dons a new helmet, fans are eager to see how he will perform with his new team. The Steelers are set to kick off their season on September 7 against Rodgers’ former team, the New York Jets.
